Who will rap MDA for their (c)rap?
The Singapore government has made a few attempts to stay hip and cool. By shouldn’t they know that by forcing themselves to stay hip and cool just for one activity isn’t hip and cool.
They tried the Hip Hop routine earlier this year. Now, the Media Development Authority (MDA) has come up their MDA Senior Management Rap to show they are hip and cool with new media.
Unfortunately, hip and cool they arn’t wrote some bloggers.
Kevin Lim, for theory.isthereason.com, says the rap is “disturbia bad; the makes-me-ashamed-to-be-Singaporean kind of bad“.
DK, for decayonnet.blogspot.com, wrote the rap “is not suitable for anyone below the age of 21 23. Contains some disturbing scenes”.
The MDA rap also started off on a bad footing. The authorities decided to stream it off their own website at www.mda.gov.sg.
“The video’s so popular, the original site takes ages to load,” wrote Tym of Tym blogs too.
Yeap, the rap has become so popular it has been YouTubed.
Speaking of YouTube, around 54 minutes of the rap, it seemed like the producers of this music video ripped off the entire YouTube layout design and replaced it with the MDA logo. Talked about being HIP.
The most disturbing scene of the entire rap would be that of Man Shu Sam, director of broadcast and film, acting as the Godfather of MDA and pointing a gun to a film maker as if he was trying to say “if you don’t do a film according to my wishes, I will shoot you!”.
In the rap (around two minutes of it), Man raps he knows good directors at the back of his hands with two good directors nodding in agreement to what Man is say. Only Yes-man directors need apply?
The silhouette of Man shaking his bum bum to the tune of the Twist deserves an RA rating for the rap.
The saving grace of the entire rap would be the appearance of Cassandra Tay, director of communications for MDA, at 2mins 30sec of the rap and 1 minute later in the rap. Comm chicks are hot and I wouldn’t be surprised if she appeared on Singapore Daily Chio Bu of the day.
So if you want to torture yourself with the MDA rap, the YouTube version of it is below.
Torture yourself silly:
Thoughts AsideThanks to capital one credit card, now anyone can avail any bank’s business services. There are offers like term life insurance quotes that are simply too tempting to be ignored. Then there are other life insurance as well as dental insurance deals. You can also avail secured or unsecured loans.

I see we both spotted the only redeeming feature of the video haha

Can MDA please explain whether they are using our TV licence fees to pay for such crap promotion?
Aiyoh! It’s quite bad man. Something is missing, the beat, spirit or just mojo - they should seriously take some cool running tips from the brotherhood. Even they model their raps on these guys

i mean, if gamblers are hedging their bets why is MDA winging it?
I reckon the intention is correct, but the execution is downright cheap. I felt as though I was watching 20 William Hungs attempting to be cool. Sure, we applaud William Hung for his guts but do we want to be associated to that fella? Hell no.
If, for the first time ever, we could get the senior management of any organisation to be willing to partake openly to any self-promotion, then please, make good use of the damn opportunity and do it well. Like Microsoft’s “Bring the love back”, Apple’s series of Mac vs PC viral videos, and just about any video from Axe. Forget about production. The concept, to begin with, is reminiscent of what that particular sad loser of an elitist class monitor in class would suggest for Christmas party. A concept like this will not even pass the Traffic department of any leading ad agency, let alone the Creative Director.
I bet on my last 50 bucks that this concept was not hatched by an ad agency. Chances are, the Client bought a dog and barked herself.
The irony is, these people rap of bringing Singapore to the global stage and being creative when all I see is a third-grade video done by a bunch of amateurs with a very crass sense of humor. It feels like a bad joke the sad loser of an elitist class monitor in class would tell, and no one would laugh.
We would applaud her guts (for allowing herself to be laughed at), but I don’t imagine any of us passing her a Cannes Lions award for “her big idea”.
To say I am embarrassed by my country’s standard of creativity is an understatement.
I like it!!
So many Singaporean netizens are such a weary, cynical lot. Do put aside your snideness & scorn & have a sense of humour. As always, I’m sure non-Singaporeans will be more appreciative of such an effort.
As a fellow Singaporean, I say again: I love it, MDA!
Hey, I think we should give them credit; anyway this is their internal video; they did not ask for it to be put on you tube.
How often have we heard that Singaporeans are an uptight lot. At least these people tried to be creative. It may not be the best (if they are that good, why work in the office when they cld have been earning big bucks rapping and having so much more fun) but it is pretty cool. Thumbs up!
