Why Singaporean bloggers choose to remain annoymous
Though a Singaporean didn’t say this, but a quote from an American highlighted by Don Sambandaraksa for the Bangkok Post best described why some bloggers choose to remain anonymous.
The mail from the anonymous contributor to Don was describing the whole banning of YouTube incident in Thailand. But it seem the mail best described the tension between government and bloggers in the region.
From the Bangkok Post :
‘‘It’s like something out of 1984. The Government unilaterally decides what it wants us to see and what it feels we are incapable of interpreting for ourselves.‘‘Under Thaksin, the systematic destruction of the free press was the greatest threat to democracy. I had hoped that the new government would recognise this and do a better job at protecting freedom.‘‘Freedom of information is a cornerstone of capitalism and loss of this freedom will have an immediate and dramatic impact on the economy. Information transparency is a light that encourages good business practice and roots out corruption.‘‘I have built a business based on open access to the internet. It is frightening to think that my entire business model can go down the toilet because of such outdated thinking. Thailand wants to be an IT centre but is using the same methods as Iran and Turkey (two other countries that block YouTube).’’The above message was from an American IT consultant who asked to be anonymous but added: ‘‘if this were a free country I would not be afraid to use my name because I would have an opportunity to defend it.’’
Tauren Alcoholic Annoymous
Fellow Taurens of the Scarlet-Crusade realm, please do not drink while riding a kodo.
You might do things you will regret.
For example, you might end up kissing an orc, themediaslut meant night elf..

Thai Government Blocks YouTube
(Update: This entry was Tomorrowed on Sunday night, March 12 2007. themediaslut would like to thank the “annoymous coward” who suggested the entry.
However, Smartbrain posted an update on Saturday afternoon, March 11 2007, that the block was lifted around noon on the same day.)
The Thai ICT Ministry has blocked YouTube. Anyone waking up in Thailand entering www.youtube.com is now redirected to the www.mict.go.th website. No updates yet as to why or what content was blocked. Google has not responded to requests for clarification yet either (though the email was sent off only hours ago).
What is interesting is that instead of the usual block page, it is actually redirected to the MICT website, with no explaination as to why.
Banana republic? Maybe. But at least the crazy, right-wing government is not killing thousands of their own people yet, unlike the previous one. Though how much more people can stand trade off freedom of speech for life remains to be seen.

When themediaslut saw Apple’s first ad for its iPhone, she wonders if Steve Jobs secretly visited Malaysia before approving the ad.
The iPhone ad is somehow very similar to Digi’s ad, which has been airing at almost all Malaysia cinemas recently. Only difference is the STAR power that only Apple could pull in.

Noticed any similarities?
Wow - An evolution of Windows Advertisements
themediaslut found an advertisement for the Windows 386 which for a long long time ago.
If you fast forward it to the last part, the Microsoft team had already tried to make Windows stand for Wow! with the accountant screaming in delight with that three letter word.
Remember, the guy’s an accountant. Nothing looks hot for him!

Apple iPhone? Bleh says Steve Ballmer
Steve Ballmer for Microsoft responding on a question about his reaction on the announcement Apple iPhone.
Ballmer isn’t worried for now as Microsoft is selling “millions of phones today” and is confident that the business user would not like it because there is no keyboard.
When the iPhone launches in the middle of the year, it would be interesting to see Ballmer’s respond then.
