Press releases as direct marketing

Posted in Media & PR by themediaslut on the November 29th, 2005

themediaslut came across this site that recommends that Press Releases be used as direct marketing materials.

Another PR blog provided more details about how Press Releases can be use for your next DM.

themediaslut finds this interesting as it position the PR professionals as marketing people, which add values to their clients.

themediaslut to all PR professionals reading this entry - GIVE IT A
SHOT!!! and if you could feedback the results to themediaslut, it would
be appreciated.

What’s wrong with this Ad?

Posted in Mag Cover by themediaslut on the November 28th, 2005

This ad appeared on this month’s issue of Fortune Asia.

From the cover of the ad, themediaslut initially thought that the ad was for the recent yellow ribbon campaign that looks to encourage the business sector to employ former inmates. Therefore, the ad space on Fortune Magazine made sense.

But the outside back cover of the ad showed that its’ a prison recuitment ad…

themediaslut finds it weird that a prison recuitment ad should appear on Fortune magazine where the readers are mostly top earning businessmen… Maybe they are looking at this businessmen to look at a 2nd career as prison’s captain. Maybe the ad looks to get these businemen to get their kids interested in a career as prison captains..

themediaslut wonders if the ad would have been better place in magazines like Teenage and Teens to target youngsters to consider such a career?

Welcome to Hotel “Abu Ghraid” Malaysia

Posted in Blogs by themediaslut on the November 26th, 2005

Jeff Ooi, for Screenshots,
was  "truly disappointed that Screenshots readers fail to see the
obvious, that technology can be an effective enabler to forge
transparency in public governance".

Ooi was refering to the
MMS video of a reportedly detained female Chinese  national who
was instructed to strip and do ear-squats.

The whole incident is now being described as the "Abu Ghraid" of Malaysia.

 themediaslut
is very curious how did the person managed to use his/her phone camera
to capture the "torture" sence in the police station itself? Why was
there a recording in the first place?

ehh.. what phone was used?

The opposition MPs in Malaysia are having a field day on their blogs too.

MP Teresa Kok showed the video to Parliament and she blogged the other MPs’ reaction.

Oppositon Leader MP Lim Kit Siang has blogged a day by day, minute by minute account of the incident.

Blog politics is here to stay… is Singapore ready for it?

Inside scoop on the Singapore Civil Defence Force

Posted in Blogs by themediaslut on the November 24th, 2005

themediaslut has come across a blog that belongs to a fireman who has blogged his views on "incidents" that happen in Singapore http://iamelvan.blogspot.com/

His Nov 8 entry blogged that  "the sect commd flew out of the LF" with LF refering to the Light Fire Attack Vehicle.

However, a Channel News Asia report wrote that "The three Civil Defence officers on board the "Red Rhino" were unhurt".

Hmm..
themediaslut wonders which is the truth? Did the sect commd really flew
out the LF? or the sect commd really flew out of the LF but was unhurt? What is the truth now?

His Nov 10 entry also has a human story regarding the big fire in Tampines.

One of the fireman who arrived at the scene found his own house on fire.

"The fire actually affected one of the firemen’s own house. He climbed
up the stairs to save his own baby brother. He let his brother wear his
BA facemask. What happened in the end was that he was rushed to the
hospital for smoke inhalation," wrote the blog..

Which was more interesting to you? The Channel News Asia stories or the blog entries?

News reporting or story telling?

Posted in Media & PR by themediaslut on the November 23rd, 2005

This four paragraphs lead appeared on The Straits Times’ front page by Tanya Fong on a report on illegal immigrants  today.

The last light in the makeshift dormitory had just been turned off, and the entire street was dead quiet.

As the convoy slowly rolled into the compound with its headlights off, dogs barked. But no one in the packed, slumbering building stirred.

Minutes later, there were shouts, loud thuds, and the sound of breaking glass as 60 Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers stormed the second-floor of the office building in Sungei Kadut Road, near Woodlands, in the early hours of yesterday.

Startled half-clad bodies scattered, into cupboards, under double-bunks and even up into the ceiling.

It is not until the fourth paragraph does the informative who, what, when, why, how, generally associated with a news report, appears.

themediaslut feels that this four-para lead is that it works very well for a feature story rather than a news report.

If Tanya Fong was writing a feature story on a illegal immigrant worker, it would have made a very powerful lead.

By painting a "calm before the storm" environment would have caught the readers’ attention to continue reading.

Unfortunately, this is a news report about "the biggest haul of illegal immigrants ever". The first paragraph should have been about information about the capture. This will allow the reader to know if he/she should invest the time to read further. It is even not attractive to online readers as the gist of the story is lost in the fourth paragraphs. However, the Straits Times regularly cut and paste their articles from print to online to save cost.

Online writers know that one reads different when online and on print.

Even so, the attention span of readers are getting shorter.

It is not surprising if a reader spends only a few minutes on a news that took hours to craft.

Thus a news lead should be short, sweet and fast to catch the readers’ attention.

Paint the background as a lead only for a feature, please.

themediaslut welcomes comments from Tanya Fong.

2nd half: Team Titan Maven Crew

Posted in General by themediaslut on the November 18th, 2005

Singapore’s Team Titan started the 2nd half with more confidence and started the half with a 9 games advantage. Can Korea’s Team Maven Crew catch up?

Team Titan will now play the role of Terrorists and Team Maven Crew will play that of Counter Terrorists.

Team Singapore is filled with confidence as they move into the 2nd half.

It doesn’t take long before Team Titan strengthened their lead and are 5 games up.

Team Maven Crew was above to crawl back with 3 games. But time is running out and they need to get the games in quickly.

Unfortunately, Team Titan is on the go and has lead throughout the 2nd half so far.

After a slow start, Team Titan dominated the round and the Team Maven Crew found no way pass them.

The final score Team Titan 22   - Team Maven 8

All for a pool table

Posted in Events, Media & PR by themediaslut on the November 17th, 2005

Tech journos in Singapore were fighting for a pool table generously donated by Text100 Singapore.

(NB:
Pool table was won by Playworks, but not collected yet. Rental property
rates per square inch in Singapore is the highest and one wonders how
rent Playworks has to pay for each day the pool table not collected.)

And the pic of the night goes to… which teaches themediaslut never get somebody to wave at the camera..

Google counts your site

Posted in Reports by themediaslut on the November 14th, 2005

themediaslut has just found out from Micro Persuasion that Google has just launched its analytics site for websites and blogs.

themediaslut is amazed at the speed which Google is introducing web
tools to the public. Google bought Urchin analytics in March 2005 and
just less than a year, an analytics site is aunched.

themediaslut wonders how will Microsoft MSN and Yahoo react to this
speed of introduction,  how will the other web counters available
in the market counter Google’s introduction?

This wordpress site is already being counted by Google’s Analytics. It’s very easy to implement.

First you need to create an account using a gmail account.

If you are using wordpress, just open the header template and paste the
analytics template just after <meta> tag and right before the
</head> tag. That simple.

One thing to also note is how Google has easily implemented a sort of
earlier .Net initiative which uses one email account to lock on to many
other sites.

Microsoft was the first introduce many years ago, when they tried it
out with MSN accounts  but there weren’t many tools to lock into..
so themediaslut thought it just filtered out.

PR Media Bloggers networking night

Posted in Events, Media & PR by themediaslut on the November 12th, 2005

Who says bloggers are left out of the PR Media networking session?
themediaslut was invited to one last night at Cafe Iguana, Singapore.

The networking session was orgainsed by Charles Yap (ex CNBC Asia
Corp Comms - now between jobs), Aaron Koh (dep ed of ITJourno
Asia/MediaConnect Asia), Mike Liew (Golin Harris) and Kim Stockham
(Corp Comms @ Zuji).

Even SMU students majoring in communications were at the session.

steadier.

<– Some serious networking going on.

<– Speak to the hand says this media personality from Marketing Magazine. She doesn’t want to be slutted.

<–
A SMU lecturer asking Tifanny Chew, now at Oligvy PR (previous 93.8 FM
presenter) about the PR sence. Look at Miss Chew. She’s in deep
thoughts.

<–  PR practioners looking pretty as always. Beware their mind though.. very smart people they are.

<– The girls from Octagon joined later in the night.

<– More PR practitioners joining themediaslut. Two girls from MDK
