As a recap, the contributors are:
Singapore - themediaslut
Malaysia - BabyBoo

themediaslut is of course looking for contributors from the other ASEAN countries, so if you are interested or have broadband, please email themediaslut at themediaslut@gmail.com.
American Barbarians Diss Filipino Food
Jollibee is a Filipino success story, kicking Ronald McDonald’s yellow ass with a 65% market share in the Philippines.
It saddens MIke, then, to see uncultured American barbarians diss it like a freakshow.
Mike has the highest regard for that stouthearted race — as Mike has American blood himself — but these guys epitomize the unfortunate "Ugly American" stereotype.
The food we eat
Happy Chinese New Year to all readers of themediaslut.
The reunion dinner this year was somehow more special for themediaslut because themediaslut was away on a business trip for 6 months then.

themediaslut replied, "Friday?"
Somewhere up there
themediaslut had a short business trip t.o Bangkok on Tuesday and was back as early as Wednesday.
There wasn’t much of a chance for themediaslut to take photos of Bangkok but only shots of the open skies.
Everything themediaslut looks out of an airplane, it remains her how big the world is..

The world is a button away…
Boo remembers a time when discounted call cards were called discounted call cards because they offered discounted call rates via Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP.
What happened basically is that you
1) buy a secret PIN number (on a card) and then
2) call a phone number (about seven button pushes) and then
3) key in secret PIN number (more button pushes).
This secret PIN is your gateway to making cheaper calls.
But do note the number of times u have to push buttons….
Now NasionCom has created a world first with hardware (B600 and B609) and service (Nasion1) to create a mobile VoIP service with up to 70-percent savings on call charges.
Executive Director Peter Tham says, "The Nasion1 mobile VoIP service works anytime, anywhere that has GSM coverage and mobile phone users can maintain existing phone numbers, simply by switching back and forth their existing GSM service to Nasion1."
Where WiFi phones can only work when there is Internet connection, NasionCom’s phones leverage GSM technology to go onto the IP layer. Boo is soooo impressed.
When users want low cost savings, they only have to push one button, as opposed to the usual way of soooo maaaaaany button pushes. However users still need to buy airtime via prepaid cards. Good news is it takes 6 months to expire.
When overseas, roaming charges still apply… the more Boo thinks about it, the more Boo is convinced that the only advantage of this phone is the tech that makes it a mobile gateway.
However, two new phones in question have 1.3 MP camera, MP3 audio, MP4 video playback, video recording, 128MB TransFlash memory card….. all these for less than RM1K ler! But there is no EDGE or 3G capability or even Bluetooth… so theres not much chance of using this as a data device.
The big boss DID say that the phones were focused on voice (but they wont neglect data, so see how lar later…).
This world’s first product and service is also Malaysian-made… Boo is so proud.. it took more than RM10 million in investment on R&D of the VoIP tech as well as marketing of the product. SInce the tech is NasionCom made, there was no royalty cost that’s why phones managed to keep price down.
The shock, the horror: Playboy Comes To Indonesia
The 21st international franchise of Playboy will be published in the world’s largest Islamic community, which has caused some to call for its banning.
As such, the long awaited anti-pornography law has suddenly rose to prominence, with many parties issuing statements lambasting the local franchisee holder for even considering its publication.
However, ever since the fall of Soeharto, the media in Indonesia has been free to publish without any government interference.
Granted, there are limits, but even those have been nearly cracked with the various “crime” and men’s tabloids that occasionally print extremely risqué photos of models.
They’ve even printed those found on the Internet and Indosence wonders how would the copyright holders feel about that?
The Indonesian publisher said that the local version will be toned down, focusing more on its editorial content, and will be subscription-based with some retail sales in select bookstores.
Playboy itself has suffered significantly since the rise of the dot coms, and the tremendous amount of free online pornography.
Once the home of “art photos” and great articles, Playboy has fallen to the lowest common denominator that has plagued other skin magazines.
Could this be the resurgence of the new Playboy?
With new anti-pornography laws threatening to punish all acts (and its publication) that are deemed indecent (such as kissing in public, dangdut hip-gyration dancing, holding hands?), out comes a book to put things in perspective.
Media Indonesia reports that Eko Prasetyo’s book, Assalamualaikum: Islam Itu Agama Perlawanan! (Islam Is A Religion Of Opposition), talks about how religious leaders today seem to be more focused on morals instead of seeking answers to more desperate questions, such as eradicating poverty.
Muhidin M Dahlan’s article points out to the various Islamic-based institutions such as schools and hospitals that charge exorbitant amounts, much more than other “Godless” organizations.
The same perhaps can be said of other faith-based institutions around the world.
Why not focus more on creating jobs, providing free education, ensuring clean and healthy communities or volunteering your time?
Or is it better to find a topic that would definitely sell more copy, and thus guarantee coverage, in order to get their names in print?
Indoscene’ll keep you updated.
themediaslut welcomes indoscene
themediaslut is slowly becoming truely ASEAN as she welcomes Indoscene, from Indonesia, to the slut network of blog contributors.
Indoscene looks at the unbeliveable happening in his country publication scene today as Playboy is launch in Indonesia.
themediaslut wonders, "How come Singapore got Crazy Horse but no Playboy yet?"
Would Smartbrain like beef noodles at Thaksin’s?
With news about Singapore’s Temasek Group buying over Thailand’s Shincorp, owned by the Thaksin’s family, themediaslut wonders what are Smartbrain’s thoughts on that?

However, if Smartbrain were to be in Singapore one day, themediaslut would like to bring Smartbrain to Thaksin’s for beef noodles at the hawker center opposite the Harbour Front.
Thaksin Beef Noodle also have a branch in Clementi and themediaslut expects this beef noodle shop to sprout around the Singapore neighbourhood soon.
The tagline for the stall was as follows, "We are bullish about beefing you.
Body language at TAM
When Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived for the opening of
Thailand Animation and Multimedia, he was not flanked by ICT Minister
Sora-At Klinpratoom, nor was he flanked by Sipa president Manoo
Oradeedolchest.
Instead it was the chairwoman of the Software Industry
Promotion Board, Kruewal Somana, who was at the premier’s side.

Kruewal
also just happens to be one of the founders of Thaksin’s TRT party, but
surely that is just a minor detail.
Her role today is as the chair of a
public organization which obviously has nothing to do with politics in
any way, shape or form.
Aside from Manoo’s absence in the
proceedings, it was also clear that something was not very right
judging from Sora-At’s face. Here we see two people smiling and one…
not smiling.

Still, to be fair, a former high-raking insider at the MICT told Smartbrain Sora-At’s default face is like that… as is Kruewal’s face, so it
would be foolish to read too much into it.
Smartbrain will see if these theories hold true and see who stays and who goes once the inevitable cabinet reshuffle takes place.
More Babelicious Geek…
themediaslut wasn’t at Malaysia’s PC.com Awards, her clones were.
This was the host, Cheryl, supposedly of Malaysia’s WOW FM Radio…
She not really a geek, but still Babelicious…. She called AMD MAD, but that got INTEL clapping and cheering, so themediaslut heard.
Another joke which got the only Aussie guy in the room laughing…
Cheryl was holding a mug of beer and said, "Here’s to 2006."
"Opps, I swallowed," said Cheryl.
"I usually spit."
There goes her protein free diet!!!

No “Inside Intel” sticker, I am a Mac
Apple couldn’t send themediaslut to MacWorld, like that Ian Tan guy for The New Paper, so the next best thing themedialsut could do was sneaked into the launch of the Apple Intel desktop and Mac at the Blue Room of the Art House..
During the Q&A, themediaslut heard a smarty-pants of a journalist asking this question, "So will we see the Intel Inside sticker on a Mac powered by the Intel Dual Core Processor."
The two presenters, EY Yeo and Darren Sng for Apple, immediately answered, "No! We won’t see the stickers on them."
themediaslut guess Apple TV and Radio ads will not have the Intel jinggle too.

Exclusive preview of MSN Live Messenger
themediaslut was given the opportunity to review the new Windows Live Messenger, also know as Messenger 8.

For easy reference, themediaslut will refer to the IM as Live.
New group option
Live now provides users to group their contacts by how recent their Space blog has been updated.
It will highlight the days and weeks their Space was last updated so you don’t have to keep going to their site to check.

New search feature
themediaslut is known for her bitching and it is why she needs hundreds of contacts on her MSN.
It was a hassle to have to scroll the list for the contacts previously.
The new search feature allowed themediaslut to pinpoint to the right bitching contact of the day with an average of just three letters entered.
Entering detail contacts have never been easier
MSN users will know when contacts pass a telephone number to call them would have to grab the nearest pen and paper.
The new Live eases the hassle by allowing users to enter the contact’s details immediately.
First click on the >> button.
A box will appear showing the Personal, Work and Notes of the contact.
If you have not entered any details, it can be done so by clicking the "edit" button.
This will open another box which themediaslut can now enter the details of her contacts and use it as a reference for the future.
The only disadvantage is this contact box can only be accessed from the main Live box and not from the conversation box directly.
This has proven to be an hassle for themediaslut as she has to keep opening the hidden main box to update the contact details.
It would be great of the developers take this into consideration and allow themediaslut to access the contact details via the conversation box, too.
The fairest of them all
Live has finally allowed users to leave offline messages.
This has been a long overdue feature which has appeared in ICQ and other IMs.
It has taken Microsoft eight versions later to meet the needs of the IM crowd.
Better late than never, right?
However, themediaslut is unsure if users of older version can receive the online messages.
The one feature the Asian version of Live themediaslut was not able to find was the reported ability of Live to allow Live users to share, not only the songs playlist on Windows Media Player, the song itself with the contact via streaming.
themediaslut hopes to see this feature in the Gold version of Live.
The Symbol “rugged computer”
Singapore’s The Business Times reported on the new Symbol rugged computer but did not put any photos of the product.
themediaslut managed to get the photo good for posting online.
It looks like a PDA but the press release calls it a EDA, Enterprise Digital Assistant.
According to the press release, the Symbol MC70 has wireless (802.11 a/b/g), supports EDGE networks on GSM, and Bluetooth.
themediaslut wonders if one could switch on all the wireless frequecies all at once.
If it is possible, the Symbol MC70 can also be used to help fry an egg..
themediaslut welcomes mediabiatch
themediaslut has a new contributor who has agreed to jump aboard the SLUT network and bitch, or should mediaslut say "biatch" about the communications industry.
But mediabiatch is different, he or she is not part of the media, but is from the other side… themediabiatch works on the marketing side of the fence and is more than ready to biatch about the media from there…
Welcome mediatbiatch and let the biatching begin!
Slut network expands to Thailand
themediaslut recent drive to get contributors from the media and communications industry is going on well..
Today, themediaslut welcomes Smartbrain, from Thailand.
Smartbrain posted some photos of the anti-government protests which occured just yesterday.
"NO coverage at all in most of local media," wrote Smartbrain.
"The
only coverage I heard piece about a "few hundred" protesters gathering
at government house. I think it was well over 100,000 at peak, but I
left a bit early so didn’t see the arrests or when they took the pics released to the public."
To read Smartbrain’s personal eye account of the protest, scroll down.
