U don’t need BAK2U, Flickr will do
An alleged thief apparently stole an iMac, use it to take a full frontal photo of himself and uploaded it into iMac’s owner’s Flickr account.
From The Adventures of Accordion Guy in the 21st Century:
It seems that this gentleman stole a friend’s laptop…well then decided to take pictures of himself, but then uploaded them to the laptop owner’s Flickr account. With all the caveats about allegedly, and innocence preceding guilt, if you know this person, etc … please e-mail Bill MacEwan at info AT workspace DOT com.
Very smart but Bak2u solutions are little more idiot proof.

Google Lynched!
On the surface, it looked liked a regular breaking news for Commsday about Google’s plans to lay “new Pacific “Unity” undersea cable” last Friday.
However, the story became one of the rare Australian articles to have made it to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Slashdot and other popular tech blogs in a single day.
From Commsday:
“However, Communications Day understands that Unity would see Google join with other carriers to build a new multi-terabit cable,” wrote Grahame Lynch.
“Google would get access to a fibre pair at build cost handing it a tremendous cost advantage over rivals such as MSN and Yahoo, and also potentially enabling it to peer with Asia ISPs behind their international gateways - considerably improving the affordability of Internet services across Asia Pacific.”
From Google News, there were up to 29 results highlighting the story, not forgetting the mention of this blog’s email to CNET’s Buzz Out Loud.

TV killed the Internet star
Amanda Congdon was a very popular host of Rocketboom.com when the series first started.
Unfortunately, her stint at ABC.com was shortlived.
From mediabistro.com:
“Tipped off by our friends from FishbowlLA, TVNewser can confirm that Amanda Congdon and ABC News are parting company. Congdon shot to web stardom on Rocketboom and has been working for the network for the last year.”

I Blogger, U Journalist
Should bloggers be considered as journalists because bloggers also create the content for the masses?
Or are bloggers are nothing but spreading gossip for their own benefit?
Cranky Geeks Episode 82 is a must watch for those trying to find that red thin line that differentiates a blogger with a journalist.

New Singapore sex rules!
The Singapore government announced changes to a few sex related laws for the resident island state.
While the local papers focused on these new laws help to give more protection to children and women, many foreign media chose to blow theirs on new rules of heterosexuals going down on their partners and entering via the back door. (Pardon the puns, couldn’t resist it!)

Did you notice how popular these new rules are with the media Down Under?
A new magazine titled Press Releases
Jayvee Fernandez of A Bugged Life just gave this new contributor a new idea.
Why don’t someone just start a magazine that is filled with press releases?
The savings are huge.
The publisher only need to hire a freelance writer to go through the press releases maybe tweak it a little to make it magazine readable and splash a byline to the story.
Furthermore, since most press releases are in digital format, with a Ctrl-C and Ctrl-P, you have a website filled with content.
With some smart SEO-ing, every keyword the website has can help it be on the first on Page 1 of Google search results.
The rewards are great too.
Since there is so little human capital invested, the magazine can last about three years with advertisements.
Continue printing the press releases for three years and after that, only feature those who advertised in the magazine!
How about readers? Hmm.. there isn’t a legal need to do auditing so just give potential advertisers a print run number. Why not give it out for free? That would increase readership figures.
Any publisher interested to put this idea into action?

Filippino writer says its a funny article, readers say it is an insult
The Philippines blog-o-sphere are intense over an article made by a Filippino writer about her trip from Boracay to Greece.
From Tinnog.com:
“With the recent irresponsible, elitist, bigoted, and discriminating comments made by Manila Standard Today columnist Marlu Fernandez in her People Asia magazine article “From Boracay to Greece” in which she makes many belittling comments about Overseas Filipino Workers and Filipinos in general, the response from Filipino bloggers have been overwhelming, and have not been light on the criticism,” wrote a Nick at Tinnog.com.
“When do we say enough is enough and that we will no longer stand for the bigotry and discrimination that takes place, not only in this country but all around the world”
The offending statements? (Taken from Tinnog.com, thanks in advance!)
1. However I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.
2. While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga sann ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I though I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.
3. On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie Cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.
4. All in all, it’s been a pretty good summer. Jetting from the Aegean Sea to the Pacific may sound a bit pretentious until you wake up in economy class smelling like air freshener.
Marlu Ferendez have responded to readers’ complains about her article but it seem sorry is still the hardest thing to do.

Who is running SMBEdge.com?
Congratulations to Questex for launching SearchSMBAsia.com, a collaboration between Questex and TechTarget’s SearchSMB.com.
The press release the(new)mediaslut received raises a very interesting question about another SMB site, SMBEdge.com, owned by Singapore’s Hardware Zone.
“SearchSMBAsia.com will be helmed by Victor Ng, as Editor-in-Chief, and Larry Loh, as Editor,” wrote the press release.
“Ng and Loh previously headed SMBEdge, a portal owned by Hardware Zone in Singapore. Raymond Tan, formerly of SMBnet, will serve as Associate Publisher in this new initiative. ”
If Victor and Larry “previously headed SMBEdge”, who is running SMBEdge.com now?
Possibly the world’s oldest blogger
No, it isn’t Singapore’s Lau Zha Bor blog.
Thanks to FeelingFlirty, via mybloglog, who has been visiting this blog lately, the title of world’s oldest blogger could possibly go to Olive Riley of Australia who is current 108 years old.
The blog posts are not entered by her, but by her friends at the nursing home. The blog, however, has become very popular in the world.
If you are interested in learning about aging beautifully or a personal history of Australia, go check out Olive’s “blob“. That’s how she pronounce Blog, seriously.
Even bloggers are skeptical of PRs
Two PR from Lewis handed over a Blackberry to a popular local blogger, Cowboy Celeb, and told him he can play with the Curve 8300 without the need to review it.
“Yeah, righttttt,” wrote the Cowboy.
“Prepare for an in-depth review.”

Congrats to MediaCorp for Cost Cutting…
After I got over the shock of seeing my chandelier swing dramatically above my head it’s tinkle, whilst sounding sweet, preparing me for it possibly crashing to the floor… I rushed to my favorite News Channel CNA…
Nothing was being reported about the earthquake, Quickly I changed to CNN and they were the first to report the 7.9 earthquake. Back to CNA and still nothing, I think after the fourth channel skip CNA broke the News…
Where I need to congratulate CNA is on the efficiency of sending the camera crew outside MediaCorp Premises and filming MediaCorp’s own staff well after the earthquake had subsided to get reactions from the man on the street… Well done MediaCorp…the budget is safe !
The case of the missing iTouch.
Talk about stars acting as prima donnas.
The star of today’s Apple press conference was the iTouch and it didn’t turn up as promised.
You know, that iTouch. Its that iPod that has the iPhone interface without the phone.
Well, the iTouch didn’t make it to Singapore shores in time for the press conference.
According to Apple’s PR, the iTouch just finished production in the US and couldn’t make it in time for the conference.
HTC is rumoured has taken the opportunity to confirm that its star product will appear on Thursday night. Rumours are that it is the iTouch evil twin which you can actually make a call with.
Congrats to Terence Tan who won the fatty Nano during the press conference.
(NB: Strange but truth, the(new)mediaslut doesn’t know which publication Terence Tan represents though)
